Kalighat Paintings
Kalighat Paintings and drawings were started in the 19th century by artists who migrated to Calcutta from villages. They started selling these around The Kalighat Temple. Indian and foreign tourists used to take them back as souvenirs of Hindu Gods and Goddesses depicted in folk and form.
These artists started imagining and started depicting social change in the society like Babus, Bibis, Seductive Courtesans and their behaviors.
This became a very popular art of the time and later became one of the most popular collective art form.
