Chinese Prints

The prints depict the views of 18th Century China. These incorporate engravings and observations made by two eminent travellers, Alexander who was a draughtsman attached to the British Embassy and Mason, a soldier. In this fascination work we are given a view of chinese life in its various manifestations - all manner of people pursuing their trade and past times, those engaged in the entertainment business, variety of Chinese customs and the public punishments of offenders - as these two men must have encountered them in the busy streets and bazaars of China. Mason’s engravings depict more of people in the course of their day’s work/activity, whereas Alexander’s engravings are more general portraying landscape, architecture, ships and harbour scenes.
